University of Alabama head coach Nick Saban announced Friday the hiring of Paul Gonnella as Alabama’s Director of Player Personnel. Gonnella spent the last year in the same role at Purdue and will take over for Ed Marynowitz, who recently accepted a position with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Butch adds the head coach of a top recruit to his staff as Director of Player Personnel

Since his departure from Cambridge in December, Paul Gonnella said he has been all over the country, around the clock, in search of the right coaching job. Finally, the most prominent virtue he expressed - patience - appears to have paid off. Gonnella said has accepted a job last week at the University of North Carolina to be the football program's Director of Player Personnel and Assistant Recruiting Coordinator. The job offer would effectively end a four-month journey that Gonnella said spanned eight states and included a stint as an assistant coach for the U.S. Army All-American Game.

Nick Scott of Fairfax visits Alabama, receives offer from Penn State

The unofficial visit came first, as Scott flew down to Tuscaloosa with his parents and Rebels Coach Kevin Simonds for the Crimson Tide’s game against Mississippi State on Oct. 27. After arriving around noon, Scott and his father met with Paul Gonnella, Alabama’s director of player personnel and recruiting, and took a tour of the football facilities. Scott was blown away.

“I walked into the weight room and my mouth was wide open in awe,” Scott recalled. “Then he said the weight room was kind of outdated and I was like ‘Huh? This is nice.’ Everything, the buildings, the locker room, they were amazing.”

USF director of player personnel Paul Gonnella reportedly is leaving after two years to start his own recruiting service. The job of instructing the defensive backs for the East squad is being handled by coach Paul Gonnella of Cambridge (Mass.) Rindge & Latin School. "The defensive backfield is going to be hampered by these rules," noted Gonnella.
